Frequently Asked Questions about Louvered Roofs

  • Do I need planning permission for an Outdoor Living Pod?

In the majority of cases, planning permission is not required for pergolas as they fall within permitted development rights. If you are in a conservation, green belt or area of outstanding natural beauty you will most likely need to obtain permission, however, other than stipulations / limitations over the pergola colour / finish, planning permission should be granted without problems.

Permitted development does however put a few stipulations on sizing:

If the Outdoor Living Pod is being installed abutting the rear of your property as an extension to your living space, then the maximum depth of the pergola is 4m for a detached property and 3m for an adjoined property (terrace/semi). Additionally if the pergola is within 2m of the boundary then the maximum height is 2.5m

If the Outdoor Living Pod is being installed freestanding in the garden, then again, if within 2m of the boundary the maximum height is 2.5m and additionally the pergola along with other garden structures such as garden rooms, sheds etc cannot take up more than 50% of the overall garden space.

Our outdoor living experts will always provide honest advice about whether they believe planning will be required, however, if in any doubt you should contact your local planning authority or visit the planning portal website: www.planningportal.gov.uk

  • How long does it take to install an Outdoor Living Pod?

Most installations of the Outdoor Living Pod are completed within just 2 days. If there is a lot of preparatory work (ie groundworks) or there is a large modular (linked) Outdoor Living Pod the installation may take an additional day or two.

Installations are carried out by our own highly trained, uniformed , specialist installation teams affectionately known as ‘Pod Squads’. At survey we can advise the installation period and will liaise with you shortly after order to agree a suitable installation date in advance.

  • Can garden lighting, water features etc be operated from the same transmitter?

Yes. The Outdoor Living Pod is supplied with a future proof 16 channel transmitter meaning you can control 16 items or groups of items from just one hand held transmitter which is about half the size of a typical TV remote control (and much more stylish).

A large clear LCD screen details the item you are operating i.e. ‘Pod Roof’ or ‘Lighting’ so you don’t have to remember what is stored on each channel number. If you were to have an Outdoor Living Pod complete with screens to all 4 sides, heating and lighting you would not even use half the available channels on the transmitter.

To get the transmitter to talk to and operate your device, our team would need to install a discreet in line remote receiver that is simply connected between the device (ie water feature) and power point. Our Outdoor Living Experts can discuss your requirements with you and advise the right receiver type(s) to operate your garden accessories and include these with your order.

Where you have an even or function you wish the Outdoor Living Pod to be installed in time for, please let our Outdoor Living experts know and we will do our very best to accommodate this. We’ve been known to manufacture and install a large triple modular version of our Outdoor Living Pod in less than 3 weeks in time for a key event.

  • What power supply is required for the Outdoor Living Pod?

The Outdoor Living Pod structure including optional screens and LED lighting can be powered from a single standard 13amp external fuse spur or socket. If you opt to have our infra-red radiant heaters installed, each heater will require it’s own separate 13amp spur / socket.

Our surveyors will discuss at survey the required power and whether you will need any additional power supply, above and beyond what your property already has in situ. In most instances, your existing power circuit will have enough available power sockets for us to connect to.

  • How long does the Outdoor Living Pod take to manufacture?

The lead time varies dependent upon the time of year due to seasonal demand, however, the average period between order (deemed to be when we have received all details required to manufacture including deposit and full survey) to installation is 6-8 weeks.

Where you have an event or function you wish the Outdoor Living Pod to be installed in time for, please let our Outdoor Living experts know and we will do our very best to accommodate this. We’ve been known to manufacture and install Outdoor Living Pods in less than 3 weeks in time key events.

  • What maintenance is required?

The Outdoor Living Pod is virtually maintenance free, however, as with any outdoor mechanical product (such as a car) it will need a little TLC from time to time. The framework including roof louvers along with the fabric on any screens installed (if opted for) can be hosed down with any stubburn marks such as birds mess / tree sap (which should be removed immediately) cleaned off with a sponge or soft cloth and warm soapy water. Ensure when hosing the structure spraying any water directly at the motor arm.

The gutters will need any leaves / foreign objects removing and on the stainless steel pins which the roof louvers rotate on, if they become dry (more prone in coastal locations due to high levels of sea salt in the air) will need to be sprayed with a little silicone (available from us).

  • Can I add screens later to the Deluxe & Prestige Outdoor Living Pods?

It is possible to add screens to the Deluxe & Prestige Outdoor Living Pods at a later stage. The cross beams for the Deluxe, which the screens are integrated within are the same for an Outdoor Living Pod with screens as they are without, the only difference is the post uprights which need to have a separate guide attached to them which the screen material and lead rail runs up/down and is locked within. For the Prestige, the screens are housed in a separate cassette under the frame.

Adding screens to the Outdoor Living Pod really enhances the use and functionality of it, preventing driving drain, acting as a windbreak, providing privacy, offering additional sun protection, helping to retain heat and acting as an insect mesh so we recommend to ensure maximum use and functionality from the Outdoor Living Pod that they are installed at the same time as the main structure itself. This also avoids a separate installation charge for the screens.

  • What foundations are required for the Outdoor Living Pod?

Ideally a solid concrete base provides the idea surface for the Outdoor Living Pod to sit on and be attached to, however, it is possible to install the Outdoor Living Pod on virtually all types of grounds surfaces including timber decking, patio slabs and block paving with a little preparation.

Most installations of the Outdoor Living Pod tend to be onto timber decking, where we simply need to add additional joists to strengthen the base frame and provide a wide enough support to each post, along with giving us a solid surface to fix the integrated base plates to usually via M10 hi-tensile coach bolts. Additionally when installing the Outdoor Living Pod on a timber decking water can run down the drain pipe in the post uprights, through a tube we insert through the decking boards/joists and out into the natural soak away under the decking, provide a neat solution to water drainage from the Outdoor Living Pod.

  • Are there any hidden extras?

Unless you are outside our main installation area (England mainland) where a surcharge for installation will apply or we need to install concrete pads because the Outdoor Living Pod is being located on grass or a surface that is not load bearing, the price you see is the price you pay. We don’t hide any costs and then sting you at the last minute or inflate them to give seemingly great discounts, we just provide fair, honest pricing for the manufacture, supply and installation of the specification Outdoor Living Pod required.

  • What guarantee is provided with the Outdoor Living Pod?

The Outdoor Living Pod structure comes with a fully comprehensive 5 year parts and labour guarantee. The guarantee covers the entire system including electronics (not including consumables ie handset batteries). Optional screens in all mesh fabric also come with a fully comprehensive 5 year guarantee. All other accessories including lighting & heating plus screens with clearview windows set within them come with a 1 year guarantee.

As with any product terms and conditions do apply, for example, we don’t cover fair wear and tear or misuse and the Outdoor Living Pod needs to be properly maintained.

  • Where does the water from the roof go on the Outdoor Living Pod?

Water from the Outdoor Living Pod roof is collected in the internal guttering built within the Outdoor Living Pod framework and down drain pipes concealed within the main post upright. We can then, depending on the application either have the water disperse from the bottom of these uprights (in the case of timber decking), or into a gravel soak away underground we create when installing concrete pads to support the posts.

  • Can the Outdoor Living Pod be relocated if I move home

It is possible for the Outdoor Living Pod to be dismantled, packaged and re-installed at a new residence should you move, however, don’t forget the Outdoor Living Pod will add value to your property, often seen by estate agents as another room to the property you will more than likely see a good return on your investment. Plus it will give your property added kerb appeal against others for sale in your area.

  • What areas do you cover?

As we only use our own, salaried installers (no sub contract fitters), particularly important with such a hi-tech product, we currently cover for single residential installations England mainland (with a few postcode exclusions). Our installers can travel further, however, a surcharge would apply to cover the additional travel (fuel, time etc).

  • What are your payment terms?

Our normal payment terms for residential orders are a 50% deposit to commence with manufacture of the Outdoor Living Pod, with the balance due at completion of installation. Our payment methods include debit or credit card (which we do not charge any extra for), cheque or cash.

As with all orders, if you place an order in your home (or at an exhibition or your place of work), you have a 14 day cooling off period to cancel your order should you wish, unless you have given us permission to commence work within the cooling off period or the order has not been placed in your home.
